How much do UCell?

Founded in 2011, UCell (www.ucl.ac.uk/ucell) is a team of PhD students, lecturers and industrial partners based in the Electrochemical Innovation Lab at University College London who are dedicated to researching, demonstrating and communicating renewable energy technologies. The aim of the team is to bring future technologies into the present day. They do this by powering events around the country with their hydrogen fuel cell system, and actively engaging with diverse audiences to demonstrate the science behind the technology. UCell provides a unique opportunity for everyone to see and engage with the technologies which will play a vital role in near-future electricity production from hydrogen. In the summer they travel to music festivals (Green Man festival and Glastonbury) where they use their fuel cell system to provide a clean and sustainable energy supply to power stages, performance tents or recharge phones. They could set up a stand at your university making tea/coffee for the students/academics to increase awareness of clean energy technologies.

The UCell Team

The team of 14 members includes 9 different nationalities: Lebanese, Nigerian, Scottish, British, Irish, Austrian, Libyan and two bosses of Norwegian-Thai and Trinidadian origins.

The team also realizes the importance of sparking interest in science and engineering in young students.  They visit schools to demonstrate some basic experiments explaining the hydrogen energy cycle and engage in discussion about future sustainable energy technologies and science in general. They are constantly trying to think of new ways to show the public what fuel cells are capable of.

What Are Fuel Cells?

Fuel cells are electrochemical energy devices. Meaning? They turn the energy locked in chemicals into electricity directly without any combustion. Because of this they can be much more efficient than other methods of making electricity such as burning fuels to heat water, to make steam, to drive a turbine, to move magnets that induce a current in a wire. A fuel cell turns the fuel straight into electricity with the help of a catalyst – all without any moving parts.

It is very similar to a battery, which also turns chemical energy directly into electricity. The main difference is that while batteries are ‘closed’ (they have all the chemicals stored inside and must be recharged or replaced when they run out) fuel cells are ‘open’ – the fuel is flowed through the device constantly, making electricity as long as the fuel supply lasts.

Hydrogen is the fuel used in most fuel cells (though others such as methanol and formic acid can be used too). It is the lightest element in the universe and is made of a single proton (positively charged) and a single electron (negatively charged) - hydrogen gas is made from two hydrogen atoms bound together, H2. Though over 75% of the universe’s mass is made from hydrogen, H2 gas doesn’t exist on earth and must be made from other sources containing hydrogen, mainly by reacting methane with steam.

In a fuel cell, hydrogen is split into its protons and electrons and reacts with oxygen to form water. Because water is the only thing that comes out of the exhaust of a fuel cell, they are very clean. Hydrogen can also be made by doing the reverse reaction to a fuel cell using a device called an electrolyser. This uses electricity to split water (H2O) into hydrogen and oxygen. If renewable electricity is used for this process (rather than methane and steam), hydrogen can be a very clean fuel.

But why use electricity to make hydrogen just to make electricity later? As more renewable sources of electricity like wind and solar are added to the grid, it becomes difficult to spread out the supply and demand for power, as sometimes the wind isn’t blowing or the sun isn’t shining. If you make hydrogen when the wind is blowing, it can be stored and used later. Hydrogen can also be transported around the country to be used in other places from where the electricity is being made. In this way, hydrogen isn’t technically a fuel – you can think of it as a carrier of energy. Energy is put into splitting water, and then the hydrogen reacts in the fuel cell making energy and more water – a cycle. Most fuels that we think of such as petrol or natural gas contain energy from millions of years ago, locked up in the ground, until they are burned and that energy is lost for a very long time. The cycle for this is on the order of millions of years instead of a few seconds!
