For Qatari residents: Do you prefer a summer or winter World Cup 2022?

Better get equipped

Qatar has announced that it will spend over S200 billion on construction projects in the country, including $140 billion on transport, while $27.5 billion is slated for roads. Such projects require massive heavy equipment and machinery, opening the market for new suppliers and increasing business opportunities for existing ones as well.

A World Market Intelligence (WMI) report states that construction equipment consumption is expected to increase in the coming few years due to continued government investment in a diverse range of education, healthcare, infrastructure, and transport projects. WMI expects the consumption value of the Qatari construction equipment market to register a CAGR of 15.66% during the next years.

With a number of construction projects in the pipeline, the material-handling equipment category expected to record a CAGR of 16.34% in the next few years. The concrete equipment category valued at $42.3 million in 2009, is expected to reach $93.2 million by 2015. Yet, WMI anticipates that the consumption value of the road construction equipment category will increase at a CAGR of 9.71% to reach $37.9 million by 2015. The consumption value of other Qatari construction equipment registered a CAGR of 33.70% in the past few years, and WMI expects this category to record a CAGR of 20.57% in the next years.

Infrastructure and transportation capture the lion share of the projects in Qatar. Real estate construction, though very vibrant, comes next. For excavation and loading, the crane-shovel family, crawler mounting, wheel mounting, tractors, and scrapers are commonly seen in construction sites in Qatar. In addition, we have compaction and grading machinery, percussion drills, rotary drills, and rotary-percussion drills which are also needed. Skid steers, backhoe loader, crawler, loader, excavator, forklifts are common in most Qatari construction sites.

Derricks are usually used to lift equipment of materials in industrial or building construction. Tower cranes are used to lift loads to great heights and to facilitate the erection of steel building frames. Horizon boom type tower cranes are most common in high-rise building construction. Inclined boom type tower cranes are also used for erecting steel structures.  Truck mixers are used to transport ready mixed concrete from a central batch plant to construction sites.

Nowadays Qatar’s rail network and metro projects are garnering the lion’s share of market attention. For rock tunneling, special tunnel machines equipped with multiple cutter heads and capable of excavating a full diameter of the tunnel are now available in Qatar. Actually, the Qatar Railways Company (Qatar Rail) has taken delivery of the first of 21 tunnel boring machines (TBMs). TBM S-865, also known as 'Lebretha' was manufactured by Germany's Herrenknecht, and is the first of four TBMs which will be used for the Doha Metro as part of the Red Line North Underground project - the design and build (D&B) joint venture led by Italy's Salini Impregilo, with South Korea's SK Engineering & Construction Co Ltd and Galfar Al Misnad Engineering & Contracting WLL (ISG JV).

Nevertheless, road construction is no less important to the overall construction projects. Qatar’s Public Works Authority has already signed seven roads contracts worth a combined $2.8bn under its local roads development program within its $27.5 bn plan. With similar projects either underway or planned, contractors are investing heavily in road-building equipment which is capable of coping with Qatar’s high temperatures, choking dust, and long working hours.

Pneumatic tools needed for road construction projects include air compressors, rock drill, jack hammers, asphalt cutters, rock splitters, compactor, and impact wrenches. For road crushing, jaw crushers, double roll crusher, cone crusher, hammer mills, screens and conveyors are in demand.

A bituminous distributor is a truck-mounted plant for generating liquid bituminous materials and applying them to road surfaces through a spray bar connected to the end of the truck. Bituminous materials include both asphalt and tar which have similar properties except that tar is not soluble in petroleum products. While asphalt is most frequently used for road surfacing, tar is used when the pavement is likely to be heavily exposed to petroleum spills.

An asphalt plant is a plant used for the manufacture of asphalt, macadam and other forms of coated roadstone, sometimes collectively known as blacktop. Hot oil heaters, asphalt melters, bitumen distributors, asphalt kettle/ bitumen heaters, portable mix plants, pavers, rotary sweepers, aggregate spreaders are all used there.

Road construction is a critical job. Contractors have to meet the compaction and pavement rideability guidelines set by Qatari authorities, otherwise, they lose credibility, money, and time by reinitiating the project.  Contractors have to choose the most reliable brands in the market.
Qatar National Vision 2030 involves infrastructure projects spread over the next 16 years. So, construction in Qatar will go beyond the World Cup date in 2022. So, it is expected that the growing demand for construction equipment and tools will continue over the next two to three years, after which time, there is likely to be a greater degree of asset management and equipment rollover from other projects.
