Take it Down to the Ground

Demolition is a rather simple process for small buildings, such as houses, that are only two or three stories high. They are pulled down either manually or mechanically using large hydraulic equipment: elevated work platforms, cranes, excavators or bulldozers. Larger buildings may require the use of a wrecking ball, a heavy weight on a cable that is swung by a crane into the side of the buildings. 
 
The majority of wrecking balls are made through a pressure forging process that hardens the steel while it is still cooling. Hard steel wrecking balls are capable of crashing through most concrete and brick buildings. They are generally suspended from a crane or other tall construction equipment using thick steel cable. Movement from the equipment swings the wrecking ball to strike the desired location with sufficient force for demolition.
 
Wrecking balls are especially effective against masonry, but are less easily controlled and often less efficient than other methods. Newer methods may use rotational hydraulic shears and silenced rock-breakers attached to excavators to cut or break through wood, steel, and concrete. The use of shears is especially common when flame cutting would be dangerous.
 
 
Hydraulic hammers and breakers
 
A hydraulic breaker or hydraulic shear may be fitted to mechanical excavators or backhoes and is widely used for roadwork, quarrying, and general demolition or construction groundwork Hydraulic breakers usually use a hydraulic motor driving a sealed pneumatic hammer system, as a hydraulic hammer would develop a low strike speed and transfer unacceptable shock loads to the pump system.
