FC Barcelona off to a flying start with Qatar airways

Written by  Author |   Thu, 19 September 2013 11:11

On August 27, 2013, FC Barcelona inked a multi-million dollar sponsorship deal with Qatar Airways, combining the winning heritage of a football club steeped with achievements and the rising star of an airline armed with fresh ideas and enthusiasm for excellence.

FCB President Sandro Rosell welcomed Qatar Airways and the airline's Chief Executive Officer Akbar Al Baker into the FC Barcelona family on the pitch of Camp Nou where the two signed a 100 million euro sponsorship contract that essentially engraves 'Qatar Airways' on the team jerseys until 2016, with the club to receive 30 million this year, 32 next year and 33.5 the following year, according to Spanish newspaper reports.  A five-million-euro bonus is provided for if the Spanish club wins the Champions League title, a published report in Spain claimed.

"Our Club has more than 100 years of history with many glorious moments. Qatar Airways is a young company which like us, strives for excellence in everything it does," said Rosell presenting Al Baker with an autographed jersey.

"Both of us are expanding globally in the world, with more and more supporters and customers and we share objectives which will consolidate our partnership."
For his part, Al Baker said "We are proud to be uniting with a team that upholds one of my country's core visions: Uniting the world through sport, enriching societies through sport, and creating opportunities through sport," who in turn presented Rosell with a model of the Qatar Airways 787 Dreamliner.

"FC Barcelona is a team that unites the world. And Qatar Airways is truly a global connector. A perfect match – bringing your fan base closer to your hearts and home," Baker added.

Qatar Airways' sponsorship of FC Barcelona marks the first commercial partnership in the club's 114-year history. Barcelona didn't use to have a sponsor on its jersey. In 2006 the tradition was broken for a UNICEF logo, while last season the non-profit Qatar Foundation appeared on it. The agreement also stipulates having Qatar Airways publicity be displayed outside the stadium and it will have a dedicated space within the Barcelona museum.  ''We have 300 million fans in the world, and thanks to Qatar Airways we can keep in contact with them," expressed Rosell.  It was also the first time the airline had committed itself to such large-scale sports sponsorship, but Baker said they knew the value of FC Barcelona ''in Spain and throughout the world''. The sponsor of the team's age-old rivals, Real Madrid, is Emirates Airlines. During the ceremony, a 90-second ad was aired showing a Qatar Airways flight attendant touching down in the Land of FC Barcelona, disembarking the Qatar Airways 777 and taking a journey through this incredible destination to the famous Camp Nou Stadium, including encounters with some of the club's most famous players, past and present.
